The 4-day trek
You can choose between two routes, either the “Sol y Sombra” trail or a trek into the National Park.
The “Sol y Sombra” route…
No riding experience is necessary for this horseback trek, we have successfully done it with complete beginners. All you need is a little adventure spirit since the paths can be steep, presenting quite a challenge to inexperienced riders.
Day 1
We ride up the green flanks of the Rari Valley, winding our way through roble forests on switchback trails, until we reach a small clearing under the mountain ridge. There we set up camp next to a spring and sleep in tents under the stars.
Day 2
After breakfast we continue up the mountain for about another 2 hours before reaching the top. There we are rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of snowy peaks. Our actual destination, however, is the adjacent Frutillar Valley, a wonderful place with its centuries old mystical rain forest, which we reach after another 3-4 hours in the saddle. We set up camp at a crystal clear trout stream. Then we take care of the horses, build a fire, make some tea, swim, fish what more could a nature loving heart desire.
Day 3
Chances are we’ll be awakened by the screeching of the parrots that like to gather on the dead tree next to our camp. After breakfast we pack lightly (saddlebags) and venture off into the jungle to find a truly unique world: giant trees, thickly hung with moss and lichen, line our path to the left & right. You can’t help but wonder what these ancient beings might already have witnessed. We stop for a picnic at one of the countless romantic spots along the stream and relax in awe. Later in the afternoon we return to base camp.
Day 4
We return to our home base in Rari. This should be easily possible since the way back is basically all downhill. The easier trail leads us down the Rabones Valley, a fertile stretch of land laced with small farms and hamlets. The more challenging one takes us over higher lying trails before descending into the Rari Valley. Either way we’ll arrive home in the evening, dust covered and longing for an extended shower, after which we’ll indulge in a hearty asado (barbeque).
... or the 4-day ride into the National Park
This route is equally fantastic. Starting from our home valley, we cross a mountain ridge on horseback and move on towards the Andes into the Pelluhe National Park. The park is named after a kind of tree that, in this abundance, grows nowhere else. (Experienced riders have the option of an extended trip, with 2 extra days of exploring an enchanting valley that leads up to where the Ancoa River springs from the rocks as a thundering waterfall.) A unique experience for nature lovers.
Either way, the trek ends at a little hotel that some madman built into the wilderness. The place is small yet classy, with a swimming pool to refreshen our saddle weary bones. After a fine dinner we’ll be picked up and brought home by a jeep. (Of course we could ride back too, but that would mean another night on the banks of the Ancoa, with a good 10 hours in the saddle the next day.)
As mentioned above, individual trek routes should be possible since our treks are always conducted in small groups (max. 6 people). Please inquire for further information and details.
